Artifacts and Data

Excavations determined that GPR Anomaly 2 (labeled GPR2) was indeed an archaeological feature. Based on the arrangement of bricks in two parallel and intact courses and that the feature is divided in half by another perpendicular course of bricks, it appears that we have identified the base of a chimney, much like the chimneys in the other buildings. In addition, two large metal objects which would have supported the mantle were identified. These match metal supporting pieces in other structures in the quarters area. GPR was effective in identifying a buried brick feature and the remains of a previously unknown and unmapped building.

A small figurine of Jesus was discovered in test units over GPR Anomaly 2, also now defined as Cabin 23. While the discovery of a figurine bearing religious iconography does not definitively prove this building, Cabin 23, was a church, it certainly helps build the argument that the building was used for religious purposes on occasion. In particular, this supports the idea that the entire quarters area is sacred and that even places with no standing architecture are, in fact, incredibly important and significant.
